The Odds Were Against Us

The odds were against us from the start. My Dad and brother had to remove the back quarter of an old shed as our block of land behind the house has been all but sold and a few centimetres of one of Dad's sheds was over the boundary by a matter of centimetres. This may not sound much but add to the fact that the roof angled towards the boundary. The odds were against us.

As our rough planning panned out, it would make more sense to take the entire back quarter of the shed as this would allow us to use beams and struts that would still there, thus negating the need to put new (and expensive) struts and beams. Don't get too reassured, dear reader; the odds were still against us.

On Friday we removed approximately 99% of the necessary timber. This timber was well-seasoned and like concrete to saw even with a buzz-saw. The small part of the tin roof was removed in a rather precarious manner by my brother. Irrespective, the job was well over half-way completed....or so we thought. The odds would soon be against us again.

Starting out the following day, we managed to totally remove the back quarter of the shed. All that was needed now was to nail the (somewhat old) roofing iron to the perpendicular struts. Dad had enough old tin to do the job. Six lengths of 2.8 metres to be exact. The odds were against us. We had to rummage through the roofing iron that could be cut into 2.8 metre length whist avoiding the rusted parts. My brother did this in no time at all....except for the fact that pouring rain and howling wind had started.

So....between cutting tin and nailing it onto concrete-like wooden struts, we almost had the job done. The wind changed direction (for the worst as we were using electrical tools) and Dad decided to call it a day.

With so little to do to reach completion, that dreaded feeling of impending obstacles has gone.

Luckily, the odds will now be on our side.
